Joe was a two-way starter for North during the super bowl seasons of 1973 and 1974. He was a powerful blocking tight end in North's devastating wishbone offense, and a hard-nosed tackle on defense.
Although North seldom put the ball in the air, Joe caught several key passes, the most memorable being his catch during the 1973 Turkey Day game when after his reception he had the presence of mind to step out of bounds stopping the clock with 9 seconds left. Those remaining few seconds enabled North to pull out a thrilling 15-12 win and send them on to their first Division Ill super bowl.
During his senior year Joe caught 6 passes for 67 yards and 1 touchdown. He also ran the ball 3 times for 43 yards. Defensively he was credited with 39 tackles and 61 assists. He was selected to the All Hockomock League Team, The Sun Chronicle Team, and the Taunton Gazette All-Star Team. Upon his graduation McNamee received a full scholarship to Boston University.
