One of only a handful of Red Rocketeers to play varsity football as a freshman, Mark Newport quickly established himself as one of the all time leading running backs in North's storied football history. Through the seasons of 1985 to 1988, Mark rushed for over 2,100 yards on 404 carries, averaging over 5 yds per carry and scoring 30 career touchdowns.
A physical imposing running back at 5'11" 205 lbs., Mark is remembered for the punishment he dished out on would-be tacklers and his amazing durability. These unique qualities helped him become perhaps the only North running back in history to lead his team in rushing for three consecutive seasons, from 1986-'88. As a senior, Mark was an offensive stalwart on an outstanding 9-2 North team that played in an epic Super Bowl on the turf at Sullivan Stadium. That game featured a brilliant Mark Newport 55 yard run down the North sideline that set up the tying score. It will be forever etched in the minds of Rocketeer fans as one of the great runs of the 80's. An outstanding inside linebacker as well, Mark registered 50 tackles on that 1988 Super Fowl team, earning him All Hockomock League and Sun Chronicle AlI Star honors.
Mark went on to attend the University of New Hampshire where he earned a football scholarship and had an outstanding career as a standout fullback and special teams player.
