As a Junior, Gaumond established himself as a tough defensive player. His tough reckless Style of play emerged as he gained confidence and strength. That confidence enabled him to return his Senior year as a fine multi-purpose running back as well as an established defensive back.
During his senior year. John ran the ball 99 times for 421 yards and 5 touchdowns. He completed 6 of 11 passes from his halfback position for 100 yards and 3 touchdowns. He caught 19 passes for 226 yards and 1 touchdown. When he wasn't in the offensive or defensive backfields, Gaumond was returning punts and kickoffs. He was the team's second leading scorer and a real force on defense, where he was credited with ckles and a pass interception. More importantly, he was the leader of the defensive secondary.
One of John's best games was a 21 - 17 loss to Canton. He caught two key passes, one of which set up a touchdown. He also scored once and was outstanding on defense.
Gaumond was recognized for his achievements by being selected to both the Hockomock League and Sun-Chronicle All-Star teams as a defensive back.
