An outstanding three sport star at AHS, Steve Mendes was best described as the ''classic" fullback on the I 965 and 1966 Bombardier football teams. The powerful, 195lb. "workhorse" was a steady, dependable ground gainer who could beat opponents with strength or speed. The versatile hard running, Mendes was also a steady receiver, returned kicks, and was outstanding on the defensive side. The Co-Captain led the 1966 Attleboro squad while scoring three times against New Bedford Yoke, including a 73 yard scamper, two more touchdowns in a big win over Coyle "when he carried defenders on his back into the end zone." A tough, hard-nosed player, Steve not only earned the respect of his teammates but also was selected for first team All Bristol County and All Sun District honors. The determined Mendes earned every honor he received by punishing opponents who tried to stop him.
