Although frequently overshadowed by his flashy backfield mates, Pete Mercier was the steady, self-disciplined player that led the Attleboro eleven through its brilliant 1941 undefeated and untied season. An outstanding all-around athlete, the versatile and speedy Mercier could do it aU from his right-halfback position. In a win over Coyle, Pete scored on a 68 yd reverse play and had a key interception in the 4th quarter. Against a tough Fairhaven team, Mercier made a brilliant 40 yd TD reception between two defenders for the go-ahead touchdown. In a 26-6 victory over Mansfield, Pete romped for two touchdowns and recovered a fumble.
On defense, Pete was like "another coach on the field' '. He had a great knack for anticipating the opponents plays and getting to the right spot at the right time.As a senior, Mercier led the Bombardiers in pass interceptions and fumble recoveries while repeatedly making "big play" tackles from his secondary spot.
In 1941 the Boston Globe and the Fall River Herald cited Pete Mercier "as a dangerous threat every minute of the game and the most improved player in the county". It was his teammates and coaches, however, who truly recognized and appreciated the great contributions that Pete Mercier made to Attleboro football history.
