Big, tough and strong, Steve Kelley was a prototypical wishbone fullback. As a junior two-way starter at both fullback and inside linebacker, Kelley excelled. In a lighting-shortened 34-0 victory over Attleboro in 1985, Kelley rushed for I 10 yards on but 13 carries. Probably his finest hour that year occured in a stunning 23-14 upset over Barnstable High. Kelley rushed for 195 yards including a back-breaking 65 yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Kelley was selected to the Attleboro Area Sun Chronicle All Star team as well as the Southeastern Conference All Stars.
As a 6" 205 pound senior Kelley rushed for 508 yards . Saving one of his last games for his best. Kelley's 75 yards rushing. 11 solo tackles, and a blocked punt earned him the L.G. Balfour trophy for the Thanksgiving Day game against rival Coyle High School. What made Kelley's performance all the more remarkable was that he did this in one half of football suffering a game ending injury at the outset of the second half. Kelley was a repeat selection to both area and league all star teams.
Kelley continued his starry football career as a starting linebacker and fullback at nearby Northeastern University where he exhibited the same intensity, genuineness, and durability that made him one of Feehan's finest.
