When you heard the name, Haynes, in Attleboro during the 90's you thought hard-nosed line play. Carl, the oldest of three Haynes brothers' started that trend. Carl was a strong and powerful lineman that excelled on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Carl first saw time during his sophomore season when his dedication and effort did not go unnoticed by first year head coach Cliff Sherman's coaching staff & team. As a junior, Haynes became more of a force on the Bombardier offensive line opening up holes for Hall of Famers Jaime Warchol & David Menard, while providing time for Hall of Famer Tyler Martin to execute Attleboro's exciting passing game. A bigger, stronger and experienced Haynes came back from Attleboro's first Super Bowl appearance as a junior ready to continue his outstanding play for the Attleboro High football program as a senior. Each game the athletic Haynes fired off the ball on offense & fulfilled his responsibilities on defense. The end result was a 7-3 record for the Blue & White and many sleepless nights for their opponents.
The 6' 1" 220 pound senior had 67 tackles (31 unassisted), 5 sacks & one fumble recovery from his defensive end position while leading the powerful Bombardier defense. Haynes anchored Attleboro's explosive offense, which averaged 32.7 point per game, from his guard position. Coach Sherman valued Carl's versatility by stating, "we shifted him from tackle to guard because we thought we'd have more flexibility on the line, also, we wanted out strongest person there." In a heart breaking 15-13 loss to Franklin co-captain Haynes "almost single-handedly bid for a victory with three quarterback sacks, four quarterback pressures and seven first-hit tackles." During a decisive 27-0 victory over EAC rival Bishop Feehan, Haynes led the Bombardier offense that totaled 352 yards (280 yards on the ground), while shutting out the Shamrocks - one of two shut-outs that season for the Blue & White. One of Carl's most treasured memories is coming back from an 18-point deficit at halftime and "dominating" the second half as the Blue & White beat Mansfield 36-24. The headline in that Saturday morning edition of the Sun Chronicle read, "Miracle comeback for AHS."
Carl was selected to the Sun-Chronicle All-Star team as a senior, while also being a two-time member of the EAC All Star team for his outstanding play.
