With the Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame celebrating its 30th anniversary, it is fitting that we honor a person who has been covering the area's high school football teams for almost that same timeframe.
Peter Gobis has been with the Sun Chronicle as a sports writer, editor and ambassador of jounalistic fairness and integrity since 1972. He has followed the fortunes, the failures, the joys and the heartaches of our area's high school and college athletes in all sports over that 28 year span. Gobis has become well-known for his Tuesday column profiling and area athlete, and he inks a very popular Friday notebook column, which includes notes and quotes of area interests.
The coverage our area high school sports teams receive is impressive when compared to other daily newspapers of similar size, and Gobis has contributed greatly. Among his recent awards, Peter was the recipient of the Columnist of the Year award from the New England Press Association in 1998 and was a Presidential Award recipient for his contributions to the game by the Mass. Basketball Coaches Association. His contributions have enabled the Sun Chronicle to win numerous awards and citations from NEPA and the Associated Press, including the "General Excellence" award in 1999 from NEPA and the "Newspaper of the Year" award from the New England Newspaper Association in 1995.
A native of Providence, Gobis attended LaSalle Academy - where he failed to playa single down in a junior varsity football game as a freshman member of the team. However, his commitment to covering today's athletes in an unbiased and thorough manner has proved to be a terrific resource for all who follow high schools sports. Along the way Peter has helped create terrific memories for those who have played in the games, and he is recognized this year as the 2000 Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame Honorary Inductee.
