For two tough losing seasons in 1981 and 1982 Bob Poirier was a rock solid, all star performer at offensive guard and defensive nose guard for the Attleboro High Blue Bombardiers. At 5' 10" 220 Ibs, the powerful Poirier was the classic, unsung interior lineman who could completely dominate his opponent on both sides of the ball. On offense Bob could utilize his great power, good speed and excellent blocking technique to blast his opponent off the line of scrimmage or clear the way downfield for the AHS backs. On defense, Bob was impossible to move and was rated by the conference coaches as the strongest and best nose guard in the Southeastern Mass Conference.
In a bruising 2 and 8 season in 1982, Poirier led a rugged and determined Bombardier defense that lost 6 games by one touchdown or less. In a heartbreaking 21-16 loss to a powerful New Bedford team, Poirier crashed through the Walers' line for three QB sacks, forced a big fumble, and threw the key block on a 11 yard TD run by Hall of Famer Daryl Cavaca. Later, in another tough 10-0 loss to a powerful Dartmouth team, the Poirier-led Attleboro defense held the talented Indians to a miserly 59 yards of total offense in the second half but could not muster the points to pull off the victory.
A two year selection to the Sun District All Star and Southeastern Mass Conference All Star teams, Bob was described as "the strongest nose guard in the SMC who was in on at least 50% of the Attleboro tackles and made several key sacks for the Bombardiers." Attleboro coach Joe McKenna remarked that "we expected a lot out of him and he was consistently our best leader."
