As a three year starter at halfback and linebacker, Shane Sackett overcame devasting injuries to lead a resurgent 1990 Bombardier squad through an outstanding 8-3 season, its best in a decade. A brilliant natural athlete, Sackett led the Eastern Mass Div 3 in scoring with 128 points, rushed for 946 yards and 18 TD's, passed
for two TD's, kicked 12 PAT's, and maintained a 35 yard punting average. A strong, durable runner Shane used his great vision and cut back skills to slash through opposing defenses while averaging 5.9 yards per carry.
As a rare two year co-captain, the 5' 10", 173 lb. Sackett preferred to lead by example on the field. Against Seekonk, Shane scored 14 second half points, boomed a 48 yard punt, and had two interceptions to key the 14-6 victory. In a tough 13-12 win over Cardinal Spellman, Sackett rushed for 140 yards. And in a big win over Dartmouth, Shane rushed for 3 touchdowns and passed for another on a halfback option. In addition, Sackett scored two touchdowns in victories over Coyle-Cassidy, Bishop Feehan, Durfee, and Somerset.
As an All Sun District and All EAC selection, Shane's football skills and accomplishments were clearly acknowledged by opposing coaches and players and the media who observed his brilliant play on the field. However, it may have been Sackett's emerging leadership and outstanding courage that really keyed the Bombardier's resurgence.
