Hard work and determination made John Copley a top-notch receiver for the Red Rocketeers during the 1980 and 81 seasons. He wasn't the fastest or the strongest but he sure could catch a football. During those two seasons Copley caught 50 passes, which is the 2nd highest total in North history.
In 1980, Copley's junior year, he gained valuable experience and confidence as North's starting split end. He caught 15 passes for 292 yards and 2 touchdowns while helping the Rocketeers to a successful 7-3 season. During his senior year Copley established himself as one of the area's best receivers of all time. In 1981 John caught 35 passes for 496 yards and 4 touchdowns. His 35 receptions is also the 2nd highest single season total in North history.
John had a great performance against Franklin. With his team trailing 25-7 late in the 3rd quarter he was instrumental in North's three touchdown comeback victory. During a last minute drive Copley caught 4 passes for 63 yards to set up the winning score. In a 29-7 win over King Philip John caught 6 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. The following week he caught two touchdown passes in a 16-14 win over Stoughton. Copley was selected as a Sun-Chronicle All-Star wide receiver.
After graduation "Cope" attended UMass Lowell where he established several pass receiving records. He established the single season reception record of 49. In 35 games at Lowell he caught 156 passes for 1928 yards and 7 touchdowns. In recognition of his achievements John was inducted into the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame.
