Biography

With a chiseled physique that appeared to be pumped into a football uniform, Steve Manning defined the phrase "work ethic" for Bishop Feehan in the early 1980's. A solid two waystarter for three seasons, Manning anchored an offensive and defensive line that produced 20 victories during his tenure as an offensive guard and defensive tackle. Among many memorable games were victories over Attleboro and North Attleboro in his junior year where his bone crunching blocks created huge openings for the running backs. Equally important was his pass blocking which allowed quarterbacks Mike Dipieto and Bob Hyland to throw for the most yardage of any team ever coached by Paul O'Boy. That same year, Manning also lead a defense that limited five opponents to a touchdown or less. After selection as an All Star for the Southeast Massachusetts Conference and The Sun Chronicle as a junior, Steve was chosen as a captain to lead the team in his senior year. However, a knee injury limited his final campaign to four games. Nonetheless, with Manning leading the charge upon his return, the Shamrock defense shut out two of its last three opponents and won every game. Along with his older brother, Tom, and his younger brother, Rich, the Manning family has displayed as much courage in the face of adversity as any family who ever attended Bishop Feehan.
