Neil Harris and Kevin Poirier combined to provide the Red Rocketeers with one of their most effective halfback tandems during the 1957 season. Their speed and quickness were instrumental in leading the Rocketeers to a winning season under Coach Ed Marx.
In the second game of the year against North Quincy Harris carried 10 times for 81 yards, leading North to a crushing 27-6 victory. The following week against Canton Neil carried 16 times for 109 yards and a touchdown, to lead the Red and White to another 27-6 victory.
His most memorable run came in a losing effort, in a 7-6 loss to Taunton, Harris took a hand-off from his own 2 yard line and burst 98 yards to paydirt for North's only score of the game.
Defensively Neil was a two year starter in the North secondary. In the 1957 Turkey Day Game he intercepted an Attleboro pass at the North 26 yard line late in the fourth quarter to help preserve a 12-7 North victory.
Harris was recognized for his achievements on the gridiron by being selected to the Taunton Gazette All Bristol County League Team as a running back. After graduation he continued his football career at Monson Academy and the University of Massachusetts.
