The three years that Michael Haynes spent on the gridiron for the Blue Bombardiers were filled with big blocks, hard hits and game changing plays. From 1996-1998, the football program at Attleboro participated in two Division 3A Super Bowls on their way to compiling an outstanding 13-2 Eastern Athletic Conference (EAC) record. The strong play by Haynes along the offensive line, defensive line, as well as on special teams was instrumental during this run.
The versatile Haynes was a mainstay on the Blue and White offensive line for three seasons where he played guard, tackle and center. Whether opening up holes for Hall of Fame running backs Jason Baker and Seth Lopes, or protecting Hall of Fame QB Nick McNamee as he looked to throw down field, the always dependable and ferocious Haynes manhandled his opponents. Mike’s first varsity game came on the road against defending Eastern Mass Division 1A Super Bowl Champ Barnstable. The Bombardiers scored with just 0:30 seconds remaining, running behind the left side of the Blue & White line which was manned by Haynes and his brother, Colin. The touchdown propelled Big Blue to an 18-15 hard fought victory, and Haynes believes that victory “helped set the stage for the rest of his football career.”
During an 8-3 senior season (5-0 in the EAC), the 215 pound Haynes continued to show his athleticism and tireless effort game after game. Selected a co-captain, Haynes was in on 128 tackles from his defensive end position, and instrumental in the Bombardiers intercepting 14 passes and forcing 21 fumbles as the Big Blue defense gave up just over 13 points per game. In dominating Bishop Feehan 26-7, left guard Haynes and his line mates escorted the AHS running corps to a total of 253 ground yards and three touchdowns.
For his efforts Mike Haynes was a two-time EAC and Sun Chronicle All-Star, a recipient of the Rojacks player of the game award, and AHS’ Lineman of the Year after a stellar senior season. Mike continued his football career at UMass Amherst where he initially walked on to play for the Minutemen, but then he eventually earned a full scholarship and was twice named to the Academic All-Atlantic 10 Football Team. Mike, who joins his brother Carl in the Hall of Fame, currently resides in North Carolina where he owns and operates a real estate investment and home improvement company.
