Steve McNally broke into a veteran Shamrock line-up as a junior center and defensive end. He labored quietly alongside fellow Hall of Famers Michael Achin and Peter Grundy on a team that featured a punishing ground game. Despite the prominence of his teammates it was McNally's key 4th down sack in the waning moments of the 1974 Thanksgiving game against Bishop Stang that preserved an 8-6 victory and assured the Shamrocks of a fine 6 win 4 loss season.
As a senior McNally elevated his game to another level particularly at defensive end. According to his former coach and present Feehan Athletic Director ''there were few players who covered the option better than Steve McNally. " In Feehan's 6-0 victory over Case High, McNally stopped a screen pass inches short of the goal line late in the 4th quarter. His blocked punt led direct;y to the winning touchdown in a 14-6 victory over arch-rival Attleboro. Leading his team to a solid 7-3 season, McNally was an All Sun Chronicle and SE Mass All Star selection.
A great lover of the outdoors, McNally is a professional fisherman in the nearby city of New Bedford.
