Biography

Intensity was his trademark. At 5'9" and 160 pounds Matt Slaney was described by Coach Beaupre, "as intense as any kid we've had." Slaney was a two year two way starter for the Rocketeers during the 1987 and 1988 football seasons. His quickness compensated for his lack of size. As an offensive guard he was a mainstay on teams that had a combined record of 16 wins and 5 losses. During those two seasons North's offense put up a total of 482 points and Matt was a big part of their offensive success. .

However, it was on the defensive side of the ball where Slaney established himself as a force. As a junior defensive end he made 36 tackles and assisted on 8 others. His most notable performance came against Attleboro. In a 34-0 North victory Slaney was immense on defense. As a result he was awarded the Balfour Trophy as the game's outstanding defensive player.

As a senior Matt was one of North's tri-captains. He led the Red and White to an outstanding 9-2 season. Which included a Super Bowl appearance against Foxboro. During the season Slaney was credited with 49 tackles and 12 assists. He also had 12 quarterback sacks and a blocked punt. Over the course of two seasons his coaches selected him as defensive player of the game six times, and his teammates selected him as their 1988 defensive player of the year.

At the end of his senior season Matt Slaney was reconized for his defensive ability by being named to both the Hocomock and Sun-Chronicle All-Star teams. He was ALS selected to the prestigious Boston Globe All State team.
